In Search Of Cheap Medicine

By: Abbey Grace Yap

The Internet-based pharmacy business has certainly grown over the past couple of years. This is mostly thanks to the convenience it offers and the cheap prices at which they sell their medications for. Prescription medications are expensive and very difficult to obtain. And a lot of Americans would agree with the former statement, especially now that the cost of health care has starting going up just like all other commodities. And now poverty and a lack of proper health care benefits are pushing people to look for alternative means to buy cheap prescription medication online.

The Internet is a open field for honest businesses and opportunistic people who want nothing more than to rip people off of their hard earned cash. And sadly enough, the rising need for more affordable medications had brought about a surge of illegal online drugstore companies that claim to be the answer to the problem of budget-friendly prescription drugs.

Here are some risks that come along when consumers buy cheap prescription medication online without checking the integrity of the online pharmacy:

1. Customers may not receive any medicine.
Some online pharmacies could be just a front that does not have any medical supplies to send out to customers who order from their site. These sites are run by scam artists who want to trick people into thinking that they’ll get good value for their money.

2. Customers may receive the wrong medications.
Some illegal Internet pharmacies send medications in a lower or higher dose compared to what is specified in the product packaging. At times, customers get sent medications that are already out of date. This poses a serious concern as taking incorrect drugs can cause harmful side effects to the body.

3. Customers may get sent copy-cat medications.
Illegitimate web-based drugstores may send you cheap knock-offs that may contain unknown components that can cause an intense drug interaction or start a life-threatening allergic reaction which, at worst, may lead to death.

4. Customers may have the identities stolen and their credit cards used without their permission.
Information submitted on medical questionnaires from online pharmacies may be used by the company’s anomalous owners to use their customer’s name to close transactions. They can also use the credit card without the owner’s permission.

How can consumers protect themselves from these risks? It’s easy. The important thing to know is if the company is legal and certified to operate. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) has an updated list of certified online drugstores that are part of the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS). The online pharmacy sites included in that list have passed the standards that were set by the NABP, in cooperation with the local pharmacy board of each state. If you’ve come across a website that offers cheap prescription drugs and they’re not listed as a VIPPS, inform your local pharmacy board so that they can work on having illegal online pharmacies removed from the Internet. This not only protects your safety as a consumer of products on the web, you’ll also help prevent other people from getting victimized by scam Internet pharmacy companies.
